About

Dr. Khatri is an experienced academic surgical oncologist, medical educator, and a physician executive who has made important contributions in his personal mission of education, scholarship, and clinical excellence.

He possesses leadership in developing and nurturing team-based academic and clinical programs, including interdisciplinary initiatives. To achieve clinical excellence, he engaged multiple service lines and business units to establish and co-Chair the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program, Melanoma/Sarcoma Program, and the Liver Cancer Program. These “interdisciplinary clinical initiatives” led to regionally recognized practice of complex malignancies within Northern California healthcare market. With such collaborative team-based efforts, he achieved cancer outcomes that were 40% higher than national benchmark for advanced colorectal cancer and quality outcome that raised the hospital NSQIP ranking to the top 10th decile nationally.

Dr. Khatri has proven experience in the academic promotion process and faculty development to support scholarly and professional achievement of physicians through his role as the Surgical Director of Faculty Development for 10 years, as member of Faculty Executive Committee, UC Davis Senate and as the Society of University Surgeons representative to AAMC Council of Academic Societies.

He has demonstrated experience in leading/managing multiple educational programs in the College of Medicine. For him, one of the most gratifying aspects of academic medicine has been participation in medical education and curriculum development. He has garnered extensive experience in developing, planning, and delivering medical education to satisfy LCME mandates for accreditation. These innovative pedagogical activities led to his appointment on several educational steering committees and task forces for medical student and resident education.

In addition to the academic achievements, Dr. Khatri has executive level understanding of team development, turnaround experience, and organizational change management. His leadership style encompasses a comprehensive repertoire for managing a diverse workplace, where communication and collaboration are critical for transfer of complex knowledge, and for effective resolution of issues. He brings skills and expertise in faculty affairs, mentoring, pedagogy, and clinical research to contribute to the mission of California Northstate University College of Medicine.

Research Interests

Dr. Khatri’s research and creative work is geared toward the implementation of clinical, translational, outcomes-based research and clinical trials. Thus far, his research comprises 123 publications that include original manuscripts, textbooks, and 55 abstracts presentations on surgery, oncology, basic science, and translational research topics at various local and national conferences

His passion as an educator motivated him to compile several textbooks as learning resources and these include: “Operative Surgery Manual”, “Atlas of Advanced Operative Surgery” and “Clinical Scenarios in Surgical Oncology”. He has been successful in obtaining internal and external funding to investigate various cancer related topics. Recognition of research activity at the national level led to appointments on the Editorial Board of prestigious oncology journals, Journal of Clinical Oncology and Annals of Surgical Oncology. For 10 years, he served as the Multimedia Section Editor for Annals of Surgical Oncology. And since 2014, Dr. Khatri has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Surgical Oncology leading to 40% growth in its impact factor and submissions.
