April 2025 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Adedeji Okikiade
Tell us a little about your background, where you’re from, and what led you to CNUCOM.

What drew you to your specific field of medicine and what makes it fulfilling for you?
My passion for medicine has always been driven by a deep curiosity about disease mechanisms and a desire to make a meaningful impact on patient care. Pathology, in particular, captivated me because it serves as the foundation for diagnosis and treatment, bridging the gap between science and clinical practice. The ability to analyze disease at a microscopic level and provide critical insights that guide patient management is both intellectually stimulating and deeply fulfilling. Pathology's role in shaping medical decisions and advancing healthcare outcomes makes it especially rewarding. Every diagnosis contributes to a larger picture of patient care, medical research, and education. Being part of this intricate process allows me to support clinicians and mentor future medical professionals, further reinforcing my passion for both medicine and teaching.
Outside of work, what are your hobbies, interests, or passions?
I enjoy immersing myself in activities that bring balance and fulfillment. I have a deep appreciation for cultural heritage and love exploring traditions through literature and storytelling. Teaching and mentoring remain passions beyond my profession, as I enjoy guiding others toward growth. Additionally, I enjoy traveling, experiencing new cuisines (most important), and spending quality time with family and loved ones. These activities keep me grounded and inspire me personally and professionally.
What advice would you give students who are about to start their journey in medical school?
Undergraduate medical education is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding journey. My advice to students is to embrace the process with resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to learn beyond the textbooks. Staying disciplined, committed, and kind to oneself is key to achieving balance in both life and career outcomes. Seek mentors, collaborate with peers, and never hesitate to ask questions. Most importantly, remember why you started your journey into medicine. Medicine is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is a lifelong pursuit of learning, showing compassion, and making a difference in the lives of your patients. Stay committed to your passion, and you will find fulfillment in every step of the journey.
Can you share something students or peers may not know about you?
I have a secret talent for storytelling with dramatic gestures. Whether it's folklore or a funny life experience, I love bringing stories to life. Also, if there’s good music, don’t be surprised if you catch me dancing a little, I believe life is too short not to enjoy the moment! Finally, I love my grandmother.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being part of CNUCOM?
The most rewarding aspect of being part of CNUCOM is the opportunity to inspire and shape the next generation of medical professionals. As a faculty member, I find immense fulfillment in mentoring students, guiding them through complex medical concepts, and watching their growth into competent and compassionate physicians. CNUCOM’s collaborative and student-centered environment makes teaching even more rewarding, fostering curiosity, teamwork, innovation, and a shared passion for advancing healthcare.
