About

Dr. Leonard Ranasinghe graduated from University of Ceylon with a degree in Agriculture. He was a Fulbright-Hays scholar and completed his Master’s degree in 1973 and his Ph.D. degree in 1976 at the University of California at Riverside in Entomology / Toxicology. After one year of teaching biology at a four-year college in Alabama, he attended Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Southern California where he completed his medical degree in 1981. Dr. Ranasinghe had his internship at the Kettering Medical Center in Ohio. He worked as a full-time emergency physician for a few years in the East Coast, and returned to California in 1988 to join the emergency departments at Kaiser Hospitals in Sacramento. In 1998 he took time off from Kaiser and worked as an emergency medicine specialist for one year at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and for six years at one of the Saudi Aramco Hospitals in Saudi Arabia, including three years as the Head Physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at that facility. Dr. Ranasinghe returned to Kaiser in April 2007 and retired from there in November 2010. During the years he was at Kaiser in Sacramento, he was also an Associate Clinical Professor of emergency medicine at the University of California at Davis emergency medicine residency program. After retiring from Kaiser he went to New Zealand and worked as an emergency medicine consultant for one and a half years. Since the time he returned from New Zealand in May 2012 he has been working part-time as an emergency physician. In 2007, Dr. Ranasinghe started a free medical clinic in Sacramento, and helped to start two other free medical clinics in Sacramento area. Dr. Ranasinghe joined the California Northstate University College of Medicine in December 2015 as a Professor of Medical Education and Emergency Medicine, and also holds the position as the Director of Emergency Medicine Clerkship.
